Salah El-Din Citadel & Mohamed Ali Mosque: 
Overlooking all of Cairo from a precipitous cliff on the Mokattam Hills, the medieval Citadel of Salah El-Din is undoubtedly the finest fortress in the Islamic world. Built in the 12th century by the warrior-sultan Saladin, it was the centre of government in Egypt for just under 700 years. Inside the walls you’ll find the striking Mohamed Ali Mosque, nicknamed ‘Alabaster Mosque’, which is a wonder of architectural design, capped by domed ceilings, supported by paired minarets that jut into the sky. It is covered inside by lustrous alabaster, lit by hanging Ottoman lanterns and from the terrace of the Mosque itself you have a stunning bird's-eye view over the sprawling Egyptian city out to the faraway Giza Pyramids.

Coptic Cairo — The Ancient Christian Quarter: 
Experience one of the world’s oldest Christian communities when you wander through Coptic Cairo, a historic walled city built atop the ruins of the ancient Roman Fortress of Babylon and said by local tradition to be where the Holy Family found sanctuary on their flight into Egypt. Lose yourself among Coptic churches, none more arresting than the soaring, suspended church known as “Al-Muallaqah” (“The Hanging Church”) built over the gateway towers of the Roman fortress and the church of St. Sergius and Bacchus constructed directly above the crypt purported to be the refuge of the Holy Family.
